San Francisco, Sept. 29, 2014 – tētēma, a new duo featuring Anthony Pateras and Mike Patton, release their debut album, Geocidal, on Dec. 9 via Ipecac Recordings. Pateras is an Australian composer/pianist who has released eighteen albums over the last decade under a variety of monikers including Thymolphthalein and Pivixki,a pair of albums (Chromatophore and Mutant Theatre) under his own name which were released by Tzadik and a 5-CD box set detailing his work for keyboards, orchestra and percussion. Tiny Mix Tapes said Pateras’ music offers a look as to where “trailblazers of avant-garde are heading,” adding music lovers will “be captivated by his bold creative foray.” “Geocidal started when I locked myself in a convent in rural France for 10 days to think about rhythm and sound,” explained Pateras. “I then went to Paris to record the drums and prepared piano...that was the first thing to go down, then electronics, followed by orchestrations of the electronics and drums. This process took about a year and a half, and we started to add vocals in January of this year when I visited Mike in San Francisco. We had the craziest 48 hours together, and somewhere in between finishing each other’s thoughts, it became apparent to us that this music was going to be very, very special.” “The interesting thing about the record is that every element is recorded in a different city, and this gives the sound a displaced, almost vaporous intensity – it comes from both everywhere and nowhere.. Everything on the record is played in live - there are no samples, no sequencing, everything is handcrafted and performed by a human. This is not a Luddite manifesto, it was more a desire to base everything in this music on feel and instinct - to never be told what to do by a machine and embrace the temporal fecundity which comes out of that.” | ||
