JOAN BAEZ ADDED TO THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS’
NATIONAL RECORDING REGISTRY
BAEZ TO RECEIVE AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL’S
“AMBASSADOR OF CONSCIENCE AWARD”
SPRING/SUMMER EUROPEAN TOUR

Joan Baez—the renowned and beloved singer-songwriter’s break-through 1960 debut album—has been selected by the Library of Congress as one of twenty-five annual recordings to be preserved in the National Recording Registry. The Library of Congress comments that the album, “preserves for posterity powerful performances from the Harvard Square coffeehouse repertoire that brought Baez to prominence as the folk-revival movement was arriving on the national stage.” Along with The Doors’ 1967 self-titled debut album, Radiohead’s OK Computer and singles “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King and “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive” by Johnny Mercer, the album has been deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Additionally, on May 21, Baez will attend a ceremony in Berlin to receive Amnesty International’s “Ambassador of Conscience Award” along with world-renowned artist Ai Weiwei. This is the organization’s top honor and recognizes those who have shown exceptional leadership in the fight for human rights through their life and work. Secretary General of Amnesty International, Salil Shetty, describes this honor as, “a celebration of those unique individuals who have used their talents to inspire many, many others to take injustice personally.” He goes on to say that Baez and Weiwei, “are an inspiration to thousands more human rights activists, from across Asia to America and beyond.”
Baez is currently in the midst of a highly successful European tour—recently selling out six nights at the fabled L’Olympia in Paris, four shows at London’s Royal Festival Hall and multiple shows in Italy and Spain. Her tour of Europe will continue in July, including shows in Turkey, Austria, Germany, Belgium, France, and the U.K. A Fall tour of Australia and New Zealand will be announced shortly.
