Today, Phaseone is sharing new single "Blood Spirit I" along with the announcement of his second album, If I Tell U. Due digitally and via limited-edition double disc vinyl on May 7th from Williams Street Records (the independent music label from Adult Swim which is responsible for Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music, among others), If I Tell U finds Phaseone building upon the successes of 2009's Thanks But No Thanks, further refining his songcraft and pushing beyond the more overt rap influences that colored his earlier work without abandoning them altogether.
Evidence of this can be found on first single "Blood Spirit I", which starts as a beautiful, slowly building ambient tune before the booming 808's and hi-hats kick in. Speaking about the track, Phaseone says, "it's a spiritual musical transmission, kind of what I got out of listening to a lot of roots reggae over the past couple years, but with a much different point of reference. It's darker, because that's how life is sometimes." The track is emblematic of Phaseone's greatest accomplishment in If I Tell U - the way in which he effortlessly navigates the sonic worlds of hip hop, techno and beyond.
