"Anika draws each song so deeply into her world that they become her own." - The Fader(Premiered "Love Buzz single off Anika EP - listen HERE) "Anika sounds like a wallflower pining for an invite to the party, positioning the song in an intriguing place between all-in inclusion and solitary blues." - Pitchfork(Premiered "In The City" single off Anika EP - listenHERE) "A characterful singer at its heart, able to turn Yoko Ono and Bob Dylan originals to new ends...strutting krautrock [in which] Anika yelps, wails and trips...narcotic." - FACT MAG “Don’t expect Anika’s new single “Love Buzz” to be your average happy romance extravaganza. And why should it be?...dark [with] healthy dose of deep bass.” - Hypetrak "A great cover." - Brooklyn Vegan “The funky backbeat taunts us...badasssssss.” - Impose Magazine There's something about that late '70s New York grime. When we hear something that sounds like it – with its mix of disco, punk, attitude and dirt – we run over like little helpless animals at feeding time. That's basically what Anika has pulled off with her cover of Chromatics' stunning "In The City." - RCRD LBL “Woozy, deviant disco.” - Self-Titled Mag "Anika takes her brand of post-punk/no wave and rubs it all over this song. Add a little bit of her throaty, polished Nico cooing and synths that sound gleaned from Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”and you have a rendition of “In The City” primed for when Downtown New York was first bubbling." - Stereogum "She lets her hair down this time around for a glam-disco floor-filler that splices and dices Chic with Thin White Duke-era David Bowie, which brings things full circle, since Anika hails from Berlin, a dominant influence on Bowie at the time.” - The Stranger |
On the heels of her critically acclaimed, Geoff Barrow-produced debut album, Anika returns with this seductive self-titled EP out tomorrow on Stones Throw worldwide.
Anika's version of The Kinks’ lovelorn classic "I Go To Sleep" leads the EP, which also features brand new covers of songs by The Crystals ("He Hit Me"), Chromatics (In The City) and Shocking Blue ("Love Buzz") as well as illuminating dub versions of previous singles "Yang Yang" and "No One’s There" by Bristol producer Ratman. Like Anika, her new video "I Go To Sleep" off her forthcoming EP is somber, mysterious and beautiful. Spin Magazine premiered the clip yesterday, calling it "a seance-ready reverie...dreamlike aura...with a mysterious white robed figure standing alone in a rowboat, awaiting the journey ahead." The video was helmed by German director Uli M. Schueppel, also behind the 1990 Nick Cave tour documentary The Road to God Knows Where).
In the Spin Magazine April cover story frontwoman Karen O of the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs along with guitarist Nick Zinner named Anika and Kanye West as their inspiration for new release Mosquito (2013): "Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Anika, the eponymous album from the punk-noir singer and Geoff Barrow of Portishead. "Those two spawned this record," Karen O says. Nick Zinner calls Anika's sound "totally fucking outsider, left-of-the-box music...didn't sound like anything else that I'd heard."
Stones Throw will release the Anika EP worldwide, continuing the fruitful relationship that began with the US license of Anika’s first record.
